Construction overview
This design is easiest to build from repeated paired circles and curved cream panels. Three raised flowers are sewn over the joins, visually connecting the sections.
Sage circular panel
Work 10 to 12 dc in a magic ring.
Increase evenly in each round to form a flat circle.
Alternate one solid round with one lightly textured round worked through the back loop only.
Stop when the circle measures approximately 14 to 16 cm across.
Cream curved panel
Begin with a semicircle or crescent worked in rows.
Increase strongly along the outside edge while keeping the inside edge flatter so the fabric curves naturally.
Add open chain spaces through the centre portion to create the fan-like lace seen in the image.
Finish the outer edge with small bobbles or picots.
Raised flower
With taupe yarn, make a compact textured centre.
Join ivory and work 6 to 8 rounded petals using hdc, dc and tr stitches.
Add a second petal layer behind the first for a fuller flower.
Leaves
Make 4 to 6 small sage leaves for each flower.
Ch 7 or 8, work sc, hdc, dc, tr toward the tip, 3 stitches in the final chain and mirror the stitches back down.
Assembly
Overlap one green circle with one cream curved panel to form a yin-yang or S-like unit.
Repeat the unit three times in a vertical line.
Sew a raised flower over each central join and place the leaves beneath the petals.
Finishing
Block the runner carefully so the S-curves remain smooth.
Pin the bobble edge lightly, but avoid pressing the raised flowers.
Colour variations
You can keep the same construction and change the palette to suit the season. For a softer look, use muted shades and natural cream. For a bolder version, choose stronger contrast between the motifs and the joining lace.
Questions I get asked
Can I make it longer? Yes. Add another repeat, connector or motif unit before working the final border.
Can I use acrylic yarn? Yes, although cotton usually gives cleaner stitch definition and holds lace shapes more crisply.
Is blocking necessary? For openwork runners, yes. Blocking makes the motifs lie flat and gives the border its intended shape.
