Winter Snowflake Spiral Tassel Hanging

Materials

Use white light blue and medium blue cotton or acrylic yarn. Use a 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm hook. You will also need a yarn needle scissors small pearl beads clear acrylic drops or crystal beads optional silver charms and strong hanging thread. For the tassel prepare extra white and light blue yarn.

Finished Size

The full hanging can measure about 70 cm to 90 cm. The large top snowflake can measure about 16 cm to 20 cm across. The spiral can be about 45 cm to 60 cm long before the tassel.

Stitch Abbreviations

MR means magic ring. ch means chain. sl st means slip stitch. sc means single crochet. hdc means half double crochet. dc means double crochet. tr means treble crochet.

Large Layered Snowflake Top

Round 1. With white make 12 dc in MR and join. Round 2. Ch 4 then sl st in the next stitch. Repeat around to make 12 loops. Round 3. In every second loop work 1 sc 1 hdc 3 dc 1 hdc 1 sc. This creates 6 broad petals. Round 4. Join light blue at a petal tip. Ch 5 and sl st into the next petal tip. Repeat around. Round 5. In each ch 5 space work 1 sc 1 hdc 3 dc ch 3 3 dc 1 hdc 1 sc. Finish with medium blue surface slip stitches around the outer edge. Sew one pearl bead at every point and one larger decorative bead or button in the center.

Main Two Color Spiral

With light blue ch 135. Row 1 work 3 dc in the fourth chain from hook and 3 dc in every chain across. This strong increase makes the strip curl. Change to white and work 1 sc in every stitch along one outer edge. Change to medium blue and work a loose sl st or sc line along the opposite edge. Shape the coil while it is still flexible.

Small Snowflake Charms

Make 4 to 8 small snowflakes. Work 6 sc in MR. For each arm ch 5. Sl st in second ch from hook. Ch 2 and sl st into the same chain point. Sl st back to the ring. Repeat 6 times. Block flat and leave a long sewing thread.

Crystal Drops

Cut several lengths of strong clear or white thread. Thread one pearl bead and one clear drop bead on each strand. Tie securely. Attach the strands to the top snowflake and along the outer edge of the spiral at different heights.

Large Tassel

Cut about 70 strands of yarn each 35 cm long. Mix white and light blue. Fold the bundle in half. Tie tightly at the fold. Wrap another strand around the upper section about 2 cm below the fold to form the tassel head. Trim the bottom evenly. Add a few silver bells or beads around the tassel head if desired.

Assembly

Attach a strong hanging loop to the top snowflake. Sew the upper end of the spiral to the bottom center of the snowflake. Add the small crystal strands and small snowflakes along the spiral. Attach the tassel to the bottom. Check that the weight is centered so the spiral hangs straight.
