Pattern Notes
Use the same basic spiral for every design. Adjust the number of foundation chains to change length.
Method
Each hanging is built in three parts: topper, spiral, and small decorative appliques. Assemble only after all pieces are blocked and yarn tails are woven in.
Formation
Sunflower topper with green-yellow spiral and bees.
Purple seashell topper with blue-lavender spiral and starfish.
Pink-purple butterfly topper with flowered spiral.
Rainbow topper with rainbow spiral, clouds and stars.
Full Pattern
Basic Spiral
Ch150.
R1: sc in 2nd ch and across.
R2: ch2, turn, 2 hdc in every st across.
Optional edge: sc along outer curve in a contrast color.
Design A. Sunflower
Center: brown MR6, inc12, (sc,inc)=18, (2sc,inc)=24.
Petals: join yellow. Repeat around: sl st in next st, ch7, sc in2nd ch, hdc, 3dc, hdc, sc, sl st in next base st. Make about12 petals.
Leaves: ch10, sc, hdc, 5dc, hdc, sc, 3sc in end, mirror back. Make2.
Bee: yellow MR6, work 6 sc for4 rounds, switching black and yellow every round. Stuff lightly and close. Wings: white ch4, hdc in2nd ch, dc, 3dc in last ch, mirror back. Make2 per bee.
Use green and yellow spiral. Sew white daisies and 2 bees along the turns.
Design B. Seashell
With lavender ch14.
R1: sc in2nd ch and across.
R2: ch1, turn, inc, sc across to last st, inc.
Repeat increase row until 21 sts.
Work 3 rows even.
Decrease 1 st at each side every row until 13 sts remain.
Fold lower edge slightly upward and sew only at the sides, placing a large pearl in the center.
Surface crochet 5 vertical ridges from hinge to outer edge.
Use blue, lavender and cream spiral. Add small pink starfish and cream shell appliques.
Design C. Butterfly
Body: black ch14, sc back. Add 2 black chain antennae.
Upper wing, make2: with pink ch8, work sc, hdc, 4dc, 5tr in last ch, then mirror back. Edge in black.
Lower wing, make2: ch6, sc, hdc, 3dc, 4dc in end, mirror back. Edge in black.
Sew wings to body and embroider small pink dots.
Use purple, pink and cream spiral. Add small flowers: MR6 center, then 5 petals of (sl st, ch3, 2dc, ch3, sl st). Add green leaves between flowers.
Design D. Rainbow
Work 5 short curved bands in red, orange, yellow, green and blue.
For red: ch30, hdc across.
For orange: ch27, hdc across. Yellow: ch24. Green: ch21. Blue/purple: ch18.
Stack bands and sew along lower edges to form arch.
Cloud: MR6, inc12, work 2 rounds, stuff and close. Make2; add tiny puff circles if desired. Sew to rainbow ends.
Use red-to-purple spiral. Add yellow stars and white cloud puffs along the turns.
Decorative Drop
Attach a small metal or yarn loop to the spiral end.
Add one pearl bead and one crystal-style drop, or substitute a crocheted ball for a soft finish.
