Method
Work the butterfly as four wing motifs joined around a wrapped center body. Crochet the spiral as an open mesh strip with a contrast border, then suspend beads down the center line.
Formation / Construction Plan
Make two upper and two lower butterfly wings.
Join wings around a narrow body and add antennae.
Make the openwork spiral strip and border it in lavender.
Shape the spiral and thread beads through its center.
Attach tassel below and hanging beads above.
Full Pattern
Pattern note: This is an original approximation developed from the visible design language of the reference image. Gauge and yarn choice can change the finished proportions, so compare your work to the listed size and adjust as needed.
Upper Wing (make 2): Ch 10, join to form ring. R1: ch 3, 19 dc in ring. R2: *ch 5, sk 1, sc next* around. R3: In each ch-5 loop work [sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc]. Fasten off.
Lower Wing (make 2): Ch 8, join ring. R1: 15 dc in ring. R2: *ch 4, sk 1, sc next* around. R3: In each loop work [sc, 4 dc, sc].
Wing Accent: With lavender, surface sl st around selected scallops and outer edges.
Butterfly Body: Ch 18, sl st back along chain to make a cord. Wrap around wing join several times and knot. Antennae: ch 12 on each side and add tiny picot at tip.
Openwork Spiral: Ch 64. Row 1: dc in 7th ch, *ch 2, sk 2, dc next* across. Row 2: ch 3, 2 dc in each ch-2 space across to force a gentle curl.
Lavender Border: Join lavender and sc along both long edges, placing 2 sc in each outer curve as needed.
Tassel: Wrap lavender thread around a 10 cm card 35 times, tie and trim.
Assembly and Finishing
Stiffen and block wings if needed, then join upper wings above lower wings.
Wrap the body cord around the center join and secure the antennae.
Shape the spiral into 3–4 even turns.
Run a strong central thread from butterfly through spiral. Add pearl and faceted beads between turns to keep spacing even.
Attach tassel below final pearl. Add top bead sequence and hanging loop above butterfly.
Adjustment Notes
For a true suncatcher effect, use translucent acrylic beads instead of glass if weight is a concern. Keep bead strands away from small children.
