Project Overview
A soft cottage-style runner combining two large blue heart panels with wide multicolor cream lattice sections. Each heart is worked in textured blue crochet and decorated with a dimensional pink rose, green leaves and a rosebud. The surrounding lattice uses cream yarn with pastel flecks and a blue scalloped edge, creating a light spring look.

Recommended Materials
Use smooth cotton or cotton-blend yarn so the dimensional stitches remain crisp. A DK or light worsted weight works well for most of these runners. Choose a hook approximately 3.0–4.0 mm, adjusting until the fabric is firm but not stiff. You will also need a tapestry needle, scissors, stitch markers, rustproof blocking pins and a large blocking surface. For highly sculptural flowers, a slightly smaller hook helps the petals hold their shape.

Gauge & Sizing
Gauge is not critical for a decorative runner, but every repeated motif should match. Make one complete motif, block it, then measure it before making the rest. A typical finished width is 30–42 cm. Length can be adjusted by adding or removing repeats. Keep all motifs from the same yarn lot when possible.
Construction Plan
Make two large blue heart panels and connect them with broad open lattice sections in cream/pastel yarn. Add one dimensional pink rose, leaves and a bud to each heart. Finish the outside with a narrow blue scallop.
Blue Heart Panel
Work from the center outward with dc rounds, shaping two upper lobes and a pointed base. Add subtle texture with post stitches or BLO rounds. Keep a few small eyelets near the outer rows.
Pastel Lattice
Join cream/pastel yarn along the heart edges. Work ch-5 arches in staggered rows to create large diamonds. Expand the mesh to full runner width, then connect it to the next heart.
Rose & Bud
Make a three-layer pink rose using staggered chain loops. Crochet two or three olive leaves and a narrow stem. For the bud, wrap two small pink petals around a green base and sew at the end of the stem.
Border
Work blue sc around the full outline, then add tiny ch-3 picots or 3-dc shells at regular intervals.
General Dimensional Flower Method
For a raised flower, begin with an MR and 10–12 sc. Build successive petal layers by making chain loops behind the previous round. A useful progression is: inner petals in ch-3 loops with [sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc]; middle petals in ch-5 loops with [sc, hdc, 4–5 dc, hdc, sc]; outer petals in ch-6 or ch-7 loops with [sc, hdc, dc, 4 tr, dc, hdc, sc]. Stagger each new petal between the petals below it. Shape the petals forward with your fingers after blocking.
Leaf Method
Ch 12–18 depending on the desired leaf length. Work sc, hdc, dc and tr progressively toward the center of the chain, then reverse the sequence toward the tip. Work 2–3 stitches in the final chain and crochet down the opposite side. For ribbed leaves, add surface slip stitches from base to tip and short diagonal veins. For fern fronds, crochet a long central chain and work small graduated leaflets along both sides.
Joining & Assembly
Block all flat base pieces before adding heavy appliqués. Lay the components directly over the reference photo arrangement: establish the center line first, then position the largest flowers or motifs, then leaves, buds and small decorations. Pin everything in place before sewing. Stitch through the firm lower layers of flowers so the upper petals remain free and dimensional. Use matching yarn and hide all joining stitches on the wrong side.
Finishing
Weave in every end securely. Wet-block cotton pieces and pin the lace openings, points and scallops individually so the runner dries symmetrical. After drying, reshape all flowers, butterflies, bows and leaves by hand. If the runner will be washed frequently, avoid glue and attach every decorative element with yarn stitches
