Materials
Use medium weight yarn in bright orange deep red dark red and a small amount of yellow or gold. Use a 3 mm to 3.5 mm hook for a firm amigurumi fabric. You will also need fiberfill a yarn needle scissors stitch markers two safety eyes around 12 mm to 16 mm and optional craft wire for the wings and horns. Use embroidery thread for the nostrils and small facial details.
Finished Size
With medium yarn and a 3.5 mm hook the finished dragon can measure about 28 cm to 35 cm tall when seated. The wings may span about 28 cm to 34 cm.
Stitch Abbreviations
MR means magic ring. ch means chain. sl st means slip stitch. sc means single crochet. hdc means half double crochet. dc means double crochet. inc means two single crochet stitches in one stitch. dec means invisible decrease. BLO means back loop only.
Head
Round 1. With orange make 6 sc in MR. 6 stitches.
Round 2. Inc in each stitch around. 12 stitches.
Round 3. Work 1 sc then inc around. 18 stitches.
Round 4. Work 2 sc then inc around. 24 stitches.
Round 5. Work 3 sc then inc around. 30 stitches.
Round 6. Work 4 sc then inc around. 36 stitches.
Rounds 7 to 11. Sc around. 36 stitches.
Round 12. Work 5 sc then inc around. 42 stitches. This gives extra space across the brow and cheeks.
Rounds 13 to 16. Sc around. 42 stitches.
Place the eyes between Rounds 11 and 12 about 9 stitches apart. Stuff the upper head lightly.
Round 17. Work 5 sc then dec around. 36 stitches.
Round 18. Work 4 sc then dec around. 30 stitches.
Round 19. Work 3 sc then dec around. 24 stitches.
Round 20. Work 2 sc then dec around. 18 stitches. Finish stuffing firmly.
Round 21. Work 1 sc then dec around. 12 stitches.
Round 22. Dec around. Close and weave in the end.
Long Muzzle
With orange make 6 sc in MR. Round 2 inc around to 12. Round 3 work 1 sc then inc around to 18. Rounds 4 to 7 sc around. Round 8 work 4 sc then dec around three times to shape the end slightly. Stuff lightly. Flatten the open edge and sew the muzzle to the lower front of the head. Embroider two small nostrils near the front.
Neck And Body
Round 1. Make 6 sc in MR.
Round 2. Inc around to 12.
Round 3. Work 1 sc then inc around to 18.
Round 4. Work 2 sc then inc around to 24.
Rounds 5 to 11. Sc around to form the neck.
Round 12. Work 3 sc then inc around to 30.
Round 13. Work 4 sc then inc around to 36.
Round 14. Work 5 sc then inc around to 42.
Round 15. Work 6 sc then inc around to 48.
Rounds 16 to 25. Sc around. Stuff as you go.
Round 26. Work 6 sc then dec around to 42.
Round 27. Work 5 sc then dec around to 36.
Round 28. Work 4 sc then dec around to 30.
Round 29. Work 3 sc then dec around to 24. Finish stuffing.
Round 30. Work 2 sc then dec around to 18.
Round 31. Work 1 sc then dec around to 12.
Round 32. Dec around and close.
Belly Panels
For the ribbed belly use a slightly lighter orange or gold. Chain 12. Work 10 hdc across from the second chain. Continue in rows until the strip reaches from the lower neck to the lower belly. Work every second row in BLO to create horizontal ridges. Shape the top and bottom by decreasing one stitch at each end for the last two rows. Sew centered on the front of the body.
Front Legs Make 2
Round 1 make 6 sc in MR. Round 2 inc to 12. Round 3 work 1 sc then inc to 18. Rounds 4 to 6 sc around. Round 7 work 4 sc then dec around to 15. Rounds 8 to 18 sc around. Stuff the paw firmly and the upper arm more lightly. Flatten the top and sew to the shoulders. For each paw make three claw toes with deep red yarn. Chain 5 and sl st back. Sew three toes evenly across the paw.
Back Legs Make 2
Round 1 make 6 sc in MR. Round 2 inc to 12. Round 3 work 1 sc then inc to 18. Round 4 work 2 sc then inc to 24. Rounds 5 to 9 sc around. Round 10 work 6 sc then dec around to 21. Rounds 11 to 15 sc around. Stuff well. Flatten the top slightly and sew low on each side of the body so the dragon can sit. Add three red claw toes to each foot in the same way as the front paws.
Tail
Start at the tip with 4 sc in MR. Work 2 plain rounds. Increase to 6 stitches. Work 3 plain rounds. Increase to 8 stitches. Work 4 plain rounds. Continue increasing by 2 stitches every 4 rounds until you reach 18 stitches. Work 5 plain rounds then finish with a long sewing tail. Lightly stuff and curve the tail as you sew it to the lower back.
Large Horns Make 4
Use yellow gold and deep red in alternating horns. Start with 4 sc in MR. Work 3 plain rounds. Increase to 6 stitches and work 4 rounds. Increase to 8 stitches and work 4 more rounds. For a curved horn place the increases along one side only for two rounds. Stuff lightly or insert soft wire. Sew two long horns to the crown and two slightly smaller horns behind them.
Face And Back Spikes
For each spike chain 8. Work back with 1 sc 1 hdc 2 dc 2 tr and 1 dc. Fasten off. Make a mixture of red orange and gold spikes. Sew smaller spikes around the cheeks and jaw. Sew larger spikes from the top of the head down the neck and along the back and tail.
Wings Make 2
With deep red chain 28. Row 1 work 1 sc in second chain and across. Row 2 ch 1 turn and sc across. Row 3 work 5 sc then ch 8 skip 3 stitches and continue sc across. Row 4 work sc across and work 9 sc into the chain space. Repeat this idea over several rows with larger chain spaces to create three wing sections. When the wing is broad enough work one final sc round around the outside edge. For stronger rib lines surface crochet three long lines from the wing base toward the tips. Optional wire can be crocheted into the outer edge. Sew the narrow base of each wing firmly to the upper back.
Assembly And Finishing
Sew the head to the neck. Add the muzzle horns spikes wings legs and tail. Check the dragon from the front and side before tightening final stitches. Add small red or gold eyebrow ridges above the eyes if desired. Shape the wings and tail by hand. If safety eyes are used this item is decorative and is not recommended for children under three years old.
