This table runner is inspired by the floral crochet design shown in the photo. It uses a soft cream lace base with large layered flowers in dusty lilac and blush pink. Sage green leaves curved vines small flowers and round berry details are placed along the center. The pattern below is written from scratch as an approximate photo inspired pattern. It is meant to create a similar handmade look without copying an original written pattern.
Finished Size
A medium runner made with DK cotton and a 3.5 mm hook can measure about 105 cm to 120 cm long and about 34 cm to 40 cm wide after blocking. You can make it shorter by using fewer lace sections or longer by repeating the center section.
Materials
Use cream or ivory DK cotton yarn for the lace base and vines. Use dusty lilac yarn for the large outer flower petals. Use blush pink yarn for the inner flower petals and small flowers. Use sage green and olive green yarn for leaves. Use mauve or dusty rose yarn for berries. Use a 3.0 mm to 3.5 mm crochet hook. You will also need a tapestry needle scissors stitch markers and blocking pins. Small pearl beads are optional for flower centers.
Stitch Abbreviations
MR means magic ring. Ch means chain. Sl st means slip stitch. Sc means single crochet. Hdc means half double crochet. Dc means double crochet. Tr means treble crochet. Inc means two stitches in one stitch. Sp means space.
How The Runner Is Built
The runner is made in separate parts. First make the cream lace base. Then make three large layered flowers. After that make the small flowers leaves vines and berries. Finally arrange everything over the base and sew the pieces in place.
Cream Lace Base
Start with cream yarn. Chain 91. This gives a medium length center foundation. If you want a longer runner add chains in groups of 12.
Row 1. Work 1 dc in the fourth chain from the hook. Work 1 dc in each chain across. Ch 3 and turn.
Row 2. Work 1 dc in each stitch across. Ch 3 and turn.
Row 3. Work 1 dc in the first 4 stitches. Ch 3. Skip 3 stitches. Work 1 dc in the next 3 stitches. Repeat this mesh pattern across. End with 4 dc. Ch 3 and turn.
Row 4. Work 1 dc in each dc and work 3 dc in each ch 3 space across. Ch 3 and turn.
Row 5. Repeat Row 3.
Row 6. Repeat Row 4.
Continue repeating Rows 3 and 4 until the center panel is about 24 cm wide. Fasten off.
Rounded Ends
Join cream yarn at one short end of the center panel. Work 1 row of sc evenly across the end. Turn.
Next row. Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the first stitch. Work 1 dc in each stitch until the final stitch. Work 2 dc in the last stitch. Turn.
Repeat the previous row 5 more times. This slowly widens the end.
Next row. Work 1 dc in each stitch across without increasing.
Next row. Work decreases at both ends by working the first 2 stitches together and the final 2 stitches together.
Repeat the decrease row until the end forms a soft rounded point. Fasten off. Repeat the same shaping on the opposite end.
Outer Lace Border
Join cream yarn anywhere around the outer edge. Round 1. Work 1 sc evenly around the entire runner. Place 3 sc in each sharp corner and add extra stitches around the curves so the runner lies flat.
Round 2. Ch 5. Skip 2 stitches. Work 1 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around.
Round 3. In every ch 5 space work 1 sc then 1 hdc then 5 dc then 1 hdc then 1 sc.
Round 4. Sl st to the center of the first shell. Ch 6. Sc in the center of the next shell. Repeat around.
Round 5. In every ch 6 space work 1 sc then 1 hdc then 7 dc then 1 hdc then 1 sc.
Round 6. Work small picots around the tops of the shells. For each picot ch 3 and sl st into the first ch. Place one picot near the center of each shell. Fasten off and block the base flat.
Large Layered Flower Pattern Make 3
Each large flower has three petal layers and a small raised center.
Flower Center
With mauve yarn make an MR. Round 1. Work 10 sc in the ring and join.
Round 2. Work 2 sc in each stitch around. You will have 20 stitches. Fasten off.
Inner Pink Petals
Join blush pink yarn in any stitch. Petal 1. Ch 3. Work 2 dc in the same stitch. Work 2 dc in the next stitch. Ch 3 and sl st in the next stitch. Repeat around to make 5 petals. Fasten off.
Middle Lilac Petals
Join dusty lilac yarn behind the pink layer. Work into the spaces between the pink petals. For each petal ch 4. Work 2 tr then 3 dc then 2 tr in the same space. Ch 4 and sl st in the next space. Repeat 5 times.
Outer Lilac Petals
Join a slightly lighter lilac yarn behind the middle layer. For each outer petal ch 5. Work 3 tr then 3 dc then 3 tr in the same space. Ch 5 and sl st in the next space. Repeat 5 times. Fasten off.
For more fullness make a second set of 5 outer petals offset between the first set. Sew a small pearl cluster in the center if desired.
Small Flower Pattern
With blush pink yarn make an MR. Work 10 sc in the ring.
Petal 1. Sl st in the next stitch. Ch 2. Work 3 dc in the same stitch. Ch 2. Sl st in the next stitch. Repeat around to make 5 petals. Fasten off.
Make about 8 to 12 small flowers. Use cream for a few flowers so the design has more depth.
Leaf Pattern
With sage green yarn chain 13.
Work 1 sc in the second chain. Work 1 hdc in the next chain. Work 2 dc in the next 2 chains. Work 3 tr in the next 3 chains. Work 2 dc in the next 2 chains. Work 1 hdc in the next chain. Work 1 sc in the final chain.
Work 3 sc in the end chain to turn around the tip.
Work back along the other side in reverse order. Work 1 sc then 1 hdc then 2 dc then 3 tr then 2 dc then 1 hdc then 1 sc. Join with a sl st.
For the center vein work a line of surface sl sts from the base to the tip. Make about 18 to 24 leaves in mixed sage and olive shades.
Curved Vine Pattern
With cream or sage yarn chain between 30 and 55 depending on the length you need.
Work 1 sc in each chain for a firm vine. For a thinner vine work sl st in each chain instead.
To make a curl at one end chain 18. Work 2 sc in each chain back to the vine. This makes a natural spiral curl.
Make several vines in different lengths. Some can be cream and some can be sage green.
Berry Pattern
With mauve or dusty rose yarn make an MR. Round 1. Work 6 sc in the ring.
Round 2. Work 2 sc in each stitch. You will have 12 stitches.
Round 3. Work 1 sc in each stitch.
Round 4. Work 6 decreases around. Add a tiny amount of fiberfill if you want a round berry. Close the opening.
Make about 18 to 25 berries in mixed mauve blush and cream shades.
Berry Cluster
Group 3 to 5 berries together. Sew them to a short green or cream stem. Add one or two leaves beside each cluster.
Layout And Assembly
Place the blocked cream base flat on a table. Put one large flower near the lower third one near the center and one near the upper third. Turn each flower slightly so the layout does not look too straight.
Arrange 5 to 7 leaves around every large flower. Point some leaves outward and some toward the center.
Place curved vines between the flowers. Let a few vines curl around the open lace areas.
Add small flowers close to the vines and beside the large flowers. Fill the remaining spaces with berry clusters and extra leaves.
When the arrangement looks balanced pin every piece in place. Sew the large flowers first. Then sew the leaves and vines. Add the small flowers and berries last. Use small hidden stitches through the back loops so the front stays neat.
Finishing
Weave in all yarn ends. Lightly wet block the finished runner. Pin the scalloped border evenly. Shape every flower petal and leaf while damp. Let the runner dry completely before removing the pins.
How To Make It Look Closer To The Photo
Keep the base in warm cream. Use soft dusty lilac and muted pink instead of bright colors. Use sage green leaves and mauve berry clusters. Make the large flowers very full and layered. Keep the vines flowing through the center rather than placing them in straight lines. Leave some open lace visible between motifs so the runner does not feel crowded.
