A cheerful hanging snowman ornament with a round crocheted head, winter hat and scarf, a soft white spiral body and a small snowflake medallion at the bottom. The long curly body gives the snowman movement and makes it especially eye-catching when hung from a branch or doorway.

Construction overview
The ornament is assembled from four parts: a lightly stuffed snowman head, a hat and scarf, a long white spiral body, and a small round snowflake medallion. Crochet the parts separately, then sew them together along a strong hanging cord.
Snowman head
With white yarn, make MR.
Round 1. 6 sc in MR.
Round 2. Increase around. (12)
Round 3. *Sc, inc.* around. (18)
Round 4. *2 sc, inc.* around. (24)
Continue increasing until the head reaches approximately 7 to 9 cm across.
Work several rounds even, then decrease in the reverse sequence. Add a small amount of stuffing before closing.
Face
Attach safety eyes before the head is closed, or embroider the eyes with black yarn.
Embroider a curved smile using black yarn.
For the carrot nose, embroider several orange stitches in a small triangular shape or crochet a tiny cone and sew it on.
Crochet winter hat
Begin with a ribbed band by chaining 7 to 9 and working rows of BLO sc until the band fits around the head. Join the short ends.
Work upward in rounds of hdc, decreasing gradually toward the crown.
Close the top and add a small pom-pom.
For the green version, use a red band and tiny red decorative leaves or berries.
Scarf
Ch 45 to 60.
Work 2 to 3 rows of hdc or sc.
For a striped scarf, change colour every row or every two rows.
Wrap around the neck and tack in place with a few hidden stitches.
White spiral body
Ch 80 to 100.
Starting in second chain from hook, work 3 dc into every chain.
The strip will curl automatically into a long spiral.
For a fuller plush look, use hdc with 3 to 4 stitches in each chain or a slightly thicker yarn.
Body buttons
Thread black beads onto a strong central cord before final assembly, spacing them between spiral turns.
Alternatively, crochet small black circles and sew them to selected turns of the spiral.
Bottom medallion
With white yarn, work 12 dc into MR.
Round 2. *Dc, ch 1* around.
Round 3. Work small shell groups into the ch spaces.
Finish with sc around the edge.
Embroider a simple snowflake on the front using green or red yarn.
Assembly
Run a strong yarn strand or cord from the top of the hat through the head, down the centre of the spiral and into the bottom medallion.
Sew the head firmly to the top of the spiral.
Attach the lower end of the spiral to the medallion.
Make sure all knots are hidden and secure.
Hanging loop
At the top of the hat, ch 30 to 40 and join back to the same point.
Test the ornament by hanging it before trimming any tails.
Colour variations
Classic: red hat and green scarf.
Peppermint: red-and-white striped scarf with a red hat.
Woodland: olive green, cream and burgundy.
Winter frost: pale blue, white and silver-grey.
