The motifs are joined together seamlessly to form a circular lace-like arrangement. The texture is dimensional and plush, while the color contrast gives a rich, festive appearance. Whether displayed alone or as part of a set, this centerpiece becomes an eye-catching conversation piece and a testament to your crochet skills. Aside from being decorative, it makes a thoughtful handmade gift and can be used for special occasions or everyday beauty. Creating this project gives crocheters the opportunity to explore motif work, seamless joining, and delicate border finishing, resulting in a piece that’s both practical and artful.

Project Overview

This centerpiece is constructed from seven floral motifs—one forming the center and six arranged around it. Each motif is crocheted separately in the round and then joined as you go to form a large circular shape. The petals are defined with textured stitches, and each motif is bordered and accentuated with a contrasting gold yarn. The entire piece is finished with a final gold edging, unifying the individual motifs into a cohesive decorative mat.

Skill Level

Intermediate. This pattern involves working in the round, creating multi-round motifs, changing colors, and joining motifs seamlessly. The texture is achieved with puff or cluster stitches, which are suitable for those comfortable with basic crochet techniques and eager for a manageable challenge.

Materials

  • Main Yarn: Worsted weight (medium/4) 100% cotton or a cotton/acrylic blend for good stitch definition. Approximate quantities:
    • Color A (Cream/Off-White, for petals and center): ~ 180 g
    • Color B (Gold, for motif outlines and final joining): ~ 60 g
  • Crochet Hook: 4.0 mm (G-6 US)
  • Notions:
    • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends and joining, if needed)
    • Sharp scissors
    • Stitch markers (useful for motif start points or marking joins)
  • Optional: Blocking mat and pins for shaping

Choose yarn with a bit of structure to highlight the textured stitches and the crispness of the motif petals.

Finished Size

The completed centerpiece measures approximately 45 cm (18 inches) in diameter. Each floral motif is about 15 cm (6 inches) across at its widest point. Size can be adjusted by using finer or heavier yarn and a corresponding hook, or by adding additional motif rounds for a larger piece. Note that changing the size will affect the amount of yarn needed.

Gauge

Gauge is not critical for this decorative project, but for reference: each individual five-petal motif should measure about 15 cm (6 inches) across before joining. If your motifs are larger or smaller, adjust your hook size accordingly. Differences in gauge will affect the overall size and drape of the finished mat.

Stitches and Abbreviations

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tr – treble crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • MR – magic ring
  • cl – cluster (specific instructions given below)
  • rep – repeat

Pattern Notes

  • Motifs are worked in joined rounds; join each round with a sl st unless otherwise specified.
  • Ch 2 or ch 3 at the beginning of rounds counts as first hdc or dc, according to stitch pattern.
  • Color changes: Work the last yarn-over of the last stitch in old color with new color.
  • Right side (RS) is always facing out.
  • Use a stitch marker to mark the center motif position or any important joining point.
  • To join motifs as you go, slip stitch into an adjacent motif’s corner or side as described in the Assembly section.
  • For puff or cluster stitches, always keep a relaxed tension to avoid puckering.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Part 1: Floral Motif (Make 7)

  1. Center: Using Color A (cream), make a MR.
    1. Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc into MR, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (16 sts)
    2. Rnd 2: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in same st, 2 hdc in each st around, join. (32 sts)
    3. Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 3, skip 3 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * around, ending with ch 3 and join with sl st to beginning sc. (8 ch-3 spaces)
  2. Petal Rounds:
    1. Rnd 4: *(In next ch-3 sp: sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) – forms a petal; skip to next ch-3 sp and repeat from * around for 8 petals. (8 petals total)
    2. Rnd 5: Sl st to middle dc of first petal, ch 1, (sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc) in each petal across.

After this round, you have a basic flower with 8 petals. We will modify this to five larger petals in the next round, to match the image.

  3. Five-Petal Reshape:
    1. Rnd 6: Switch to forming five large petals. In the round, crochet *sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, (tr, ch 2, tr) all in next st for petal point, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts.* Repeat from * to * four more times around, join (five total petal points).

Adjust spacing between the points so all petals are even. If needed, fudge by skipping or adding one stitch in a less noticeable area.

  4. Petal Texture (Cluster Row):
    1. Rnd 7: Ch 1, working in BLO (back loops only) for extra texture, sc in each st, but at the tip of each “petal”, do: (sc, ch 2, sc) into the ch-2 space.

This shapes the five-petal form and gives clear definition between petals.

  5. Petal Border:
    1. Rnd 8: Join Color B (gold) at the base of any petal. Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 2 sc in the ch-2 space at each petal tip, and at the dip between two petals, skip 1 st to maintain shape. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Part 2: Joining Motifs

  1. Lay out your motifs: 1 in the center with 6 surrounding.
  2. Join as you go with Color B, or use a tapestry needle and whip stitch. To join as you go: On the last round of the petal border, at a petal tip or side where motifs meet, instead of working a sc, do a sl st into the adjacent motif’s corresponding stitch, then continue from there. Join neatly for a seamless look.
  3. Attach each outer motif to the center at one petal, and radially join each outer motif’s adjacent petals together at the sides (so that sides are tacked, not just tips). Secure and weave in all ends as you go to minimize finishing work.

Part 3: Final Edging

  1. With Color B, attach yarn to any point on the outer edge. Ch 1, sc evenly around the entire circumference, working 2 sc in each petal tip and skipping 1 sc at each valley for smooth shaping. Join with sl st, fasten off, and weave in all ends.

Assembly and Finishing

When all motifs are complete and joined, lay the centerpiece flat on a blocking mat, gently shape the petal points and motif edges into a round. Mist lightly with water or use steam (hover, do not press), then pin all points and valleys to open up the lace texture. Allow to fully dry before unpinning. Carefully weave in any remaining yarn ends with the tapestry needle. Trim all threads neatly, inspecting both sides to ensure best presentation. If desired, give an additional light press under a cloth for extra crispness.

Customization Ideas

  • Color: Use ombré yarn for the petals for a gradient effect, or alternate motif colors for a patchwork look. Metallics or festive red/green for holidays.
  • Size: Add more rounds or petals, or make extra motifs and extend the joining for larger mats or table runners.
  • Use: Reduce motif count for coasters or placemats, or make a single motif for an appliqué on pillows or bags.
  • Yarn Weight: Use DK for a daintier look or chunky for more impact; adjust hook size accordingly.

Troubleshooting

  • Curling or Warping: Check stitch counts on each motif. Too many or too few stitches in the petal border can create ruffles or pulls. Gently block flat after joining.
  • Uneven Edges: Ensure consistent sc and proper increases at petal points. Blocking helps settle any waviness.
  • Piece Too Large/Small: Check your hook size and tension. Substitute a larger or smaller hook as needed; wash and block can help relax extra tightness.
  • Loose Color Changes: Fasten off securely at joins and weave ends carefully. Overlap yarns slightly when changing borders to avoid visible gaps.
  • Uneven Tension: Ensure puff/cluster stitches are worked with even pull and all starting chains are of equal height. Work slowly at joins to ensure smooth transitions and uniform look.

Care Instructions

Hand-wash your finished centerpiece gently in cool water with mild soap. Rinse carefully, and squeeze (do not wring) excess water. Lay flat on a towel to dry, gently reshaping motifs and petals as needed. For best results, store flat and avoid folding to prevent creases.

Final Notes

Take time to check stitch counts at the end of each motif round for consistent size. Adjust your hook or tension to keep motifs uniform. Use the photo as a visual guide to layout and join the motifs, and enjoy the process of turning simple textured stitches into a work of art for your home.
