Red Daisy Granny Square Bedspread with Ruffle Edge Crochet Pattern

Wake up to sunshine every day with this cheerful red daisy bedspread. Each square features a layered flower with white petals, a golden center, and a ring of golden shell petals, all set on a rich red background with open lace windows. The squares are joined into a full bed cover and finished with a deep ruffled edge that drapes beautifully over the sides of the bed. Two matching pillow covers complete the cozy bedroom set.

The bedspread is made from many identical squares, so you can work on it one square at a time. Once you know the square by heart, the project becomes a relaxing and rewarding routine.

Part 1: The Daisy Square (make 80 for the bedspread)

Golden Center
With golden yellow, chain 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Round 1: Chain 1 and work 8 single crochet in the ring. Join.
Round 2: Chain 1 and work 2 single crochet in each stitch around. Join. You have 16 stitches.
Round 3: Chain 1 and single crochet in the back loops only around. Join and fasten off. This creates a small raised ring around the center.

White Petals
Round 4: Join cream in any front loop from Round 3. Chain 7. Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook, half double crochet in the next chain, double crochet in the next 3 chains, and half double crochet in the last chain. Skip 1 stitch on the center and slip stitch in the next stitch. Repeat around to make 8 rounded petals. Join and fasten off.

Golden Shell Petals
Round 5: Join golden yellow behind any white petal. Single crochet around the post of the slip stitch between two white petals, then chain 6. Repeat around, working behind each petal. Join. You have 8 chain 6 loops.
Round 6: In each chain 6 loop, work single crochet, half double crochet, 7 double crochet, half double crochet, and single crochet. You now have 8 golden shell petals that peek out behind the white petals. Fasten off.

Red Background
Round 7: Join red in the center double crochet of any golden petal. Chain 1 and single crochet in the same stitch. Chain 5 and single crochet in the center of the next petal. Repeat around. Join. You have 8 chain 5 spaces.
Round 8: Now turn the circle into a square. Slip stitch into the first space.
Corner spaces: Work 3 double crochet, chain 3, and 3 double crochet.
Side spaces: Work 5 double crochet.
Alternate corner and side spaces around so you have 4 corners. Join.
Round 9: Chain 3 and double crochet in the next 2 stitches. Chain 3, skip 2 stitches, and double crochet in the next stitches to create open windows like the photo. In each corner space, work 3 double crochet, chain 3, and 3 double crochet. Adjust so there are 2 open windows on each side. Join.
Round 10: Chain 3 and work double crochet in each stitch and 3 double crochet in each chain 3 window space along the sides. In each corner, work 3 double crochet, chain 3, and 3 double crochet. Join.
Round 11: Chain 1 and single crochet in each stitch around, with 3 single crochet in each corner space. Join and fasten off, leaving a long tail for joining.

Check your square. It should measure about 22 cm across. Go down a hook size if it is too big, or up a size if it is too small.

Part 2: Joining the Squares
Lay out the squares in 10 rows of 8.
Hold two squares with the wrong sides together. With red, join through the back loops of both squares and work single crochet along the edge. This makes a neat raised ridge between squares on the front.
Join all squares into rows, then join the rows together the same way.
At the corners where four squares meet, work 1 chain to keep the corners flat.

Part 3: The Ruffle Edge
The ruffle runs along both long sides and the bottom of the bedspread. Leave the top edge plain.

Round 1: Join red at the top corner of one long side. Work single crochet evenly along the side, across the bottom, and up the other side. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 3 and work 2 double crochet in each stitch across. This doubles the stitch count and creates the gathers. Turn.
Row 3: Chain 3 and work double crochet in each stitch across. Turn.
Row 4: Chain 3, then work 1 front post double crochet and 1 back post double crochet across. This creates the vertical ribs you see in the ruffle. Turn.
Rows 5 to 10: Repeat Row 4 until the ruffle measures about 20 cm deep.
Row 11: Chain 1 and single crochet in each stitch across. For a soft wavy finish, work 3 double crochet in every fourth stitch instead.
Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Tip: The ruffle uses a lot of yarn. Work it in sections and join new yarn at the corners so the joins stay hidden.

Part 4: Pillow Covers (make 2)
Front: Make 1 daisy square, but continue Rounds 10 and 11 until the square measures about 40 cm across. Work every other round as an open window round to match the bedspread.
Back: With red, make a plain granny square of the same size, or work rows of double crochet until it matches the front.
Joining: Place the front and back together with the wrong sides facing. With red, work single crochet through both layers along 3 sides. Insert the pillow form and close the last side.
Edging: Work a round of chain 3 picots around the outer edge for a neat finish.

Blocking
Block each square before joining. Pin it to 22 cm on a blocking mat, spray lightly with water, and let it dry. After joining, lay the bedspread flat, spray the seams and ruffle lightly, and shape the ruffle folds by hand.

Care
Machine wash on a gentle cold cycle if using acrylic, or hand wash if using cotton. Lay flat to dry and fluff the ruffle while damp. Do not hang the bedspread to dry, as the weight can stretch it.

Color Ideas
Navy background with white and yellow daisies for a fresh summer look
Sage green background with cream and pink flowers for a cottage style
Cream background with red and white flowers for a bright, airy bedroom
Brown background with orange and gold flowers for a cozy autumn feel
Gray background with white and mustard flowers for a modern room

Tips for Success
Make the flower centers in batches, then the petals, then the red rounds. Working in stages is faster than finishing one square at a time.
Weave in your ends as you go, so you are not left with hundreds at the end.
Buy all your yarn from the same dye lot so the colors match.
Lay out all the squares before joining to make sure they are the same size.
Start with a pillow cover if you want to practice the square first.
