Gauge and Pattern Notes
The main spiral must be firm enough to hold a wide circular shape. If your yarn is soft, use a smaller hook or add a strand of cotton cord inside the outer edging.
The pictured piece appears sculptural and may use internal support. This written version uses a strong center cord plus regular hidden tacking stitches between tiers.
Work decorative snowmen before final assembly so you can test their weight and determine where additional support is needed.
Method
The project starts with a long icy-blue strip that gradually widens from top to bottom. White edging and extra stitches along one side force the strip to curve. During assembly, the strip is wrapped around a center cord in four to five descending circles, creating an open spiral-tree silhouette. Small snowmen sit on selected tiers, while snowflakes and icicles hang from the outer edge.
Formation / Construction Plan
1. Crochet the tapered blue strip from narrow top to wide base.
2. Work white snow edging along the outer edge and add shaping increases to encourage curling.
3. Crochet four miniature snowmen, several snowflakes and a set of icicles.
4. Prepare a strong center cord and top hanging loop.
5. Wrap the strip around the cord in descending tiers, widening each turn.
6. Secure snowmen on top of selected tiers and suspend snowflakes/icicles below.
7. Finish with a large snowflake at the top and a clean wide base.

Crochet Icicle – Make 10 to 16
40. With white or clear-look yarn, ch 12-20.

42. FO, leaving a long hanging tail.
43. For a twistier icicle, work 2 sc into each chain instead.
Small Snowflake – Make 4 to 6
44. Magic ring, ch 1, work 12 sc in ring, join.
45. *Ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch, sc in next, ch 3, sl st in first ch, sc in next base ch, hdc in last base ch, sl st in next sc of ring*; repeat 6 times evenly.
46. FO and block firmly.
Large Top Snowflake
47. Work the small snowflake pattern with a 3.5 mm hook and add one extra ch-3 picot to each arm.
48. Optionally crochet a second matching snowflake and stitch the two together for stiffness.
Assembly and Final Shaping
49. Cut 85-100 cm of strong support cord and create a 12 cm hanging loop at the top.
50. Attach the large snowflake under the hanging loop.
51. Sew the narrow end of the spiral strip to the support cord 2-3 cm below the snowflake.
52. Form the first turn approximately 8-10 cm wide, then continue downward in four or five turns.
53. Increase each circle by roughly 4-6 cm in diameter so the silhouette becomes tree-shaped.
54. At each turn, tack the inside edge firmly to the center cord and add one hidden stitch to the tier above or below.
55. Seat one snowman on each of four selected tiers. Sew through the base of each snowman and into the spiral strip at three points.
56. Attach icicles to the white outer edging with short hanging loops, varying their lengths.
57. Add small snowflakes between snowmen and icicles.
58. Hang the entire piece and adjust the tier spacing until the spiral descends evenly.
Finishing and Blocking
59. Lightly wet-block the strip before final shaping if the edge is uneven.
60. Do not flatten the final assembled spiral; hanging is the best way to set its dimensional shape.
61. Secure every ornament tail inside the thick blue strip.
62. If the base droops, thread flexible plastic cord or craft wire through the final white edging and stitch the ends closed.
63. Because of dangling parts, use the finished item as decoration rather than as a toy.
Optional Variations
• Use pale lilac and white for a frosted lavender version.
• Replace snowmen with penguins or polar bears.
• Add clear beads to the ends of icicles for extra sparkle.
• Make the strip in white and edge it in silver for a monochrome winter tree.
• Add battery-operated micro lights only if they remain cool and are designed for craft use
