Gauge and Pattern Notes
This version is designed as a decorative mobile. The cottages are light amigurumi-style constructions, not rigid models.
The broad white spiral carries more weight than a simple ornament, so reinforcement is strongly recommended. Plastic boning or coated craft wire can be enclosed in the outer edging.
This is a photo-inspired reconstruction. Cottage dimensions and exact tier spacing may be adjusted to suit your yarn and room height.
Method
The main structure is a long white strip that widens toward the bottom and is shaped into a strong descending helix. A center support cord carries the weight. The strip is reinforced and tacked at each turn. Miniature crochet cottages are built from simple rectangular walls and peaked roof pieces, lightly stuffed, and then sewn to selected tiers. Small stars hang between levels and one large star finishes the top.
Formation / Construction Plan
1. Crochet a tapered white strip long enough for four to five wide turns.
2. Add a reinforced outer border and shaping stitches to force a controlled curl.
3. Crochet five miniature cottages in mixed colors and several gold stars.
4. Prepare the vertical support cord and top star.
5. Wrap and secure the white strip into a descending tree-like spiral.
6. Place cottages at alternating points so the composition remains balanced.
7. Suspend gold stars between cottages and finish the lower tier cleanly.

8. With white, ch 10. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc 9. Turn.
9. Rows 2-20: Ch 1, sc across 9. Turn.

Reinforced Outer Edge
20. Join white to one long edge. Work 2 hdc in each of the first 35 row-end spaces.
21. Work 3 hdc in each of the next 55 row-end spaces.
22. Work 4 hdc in each remaining row-end space.
23. Next row: ch 1, sc across. If using flexible boning or wire, lay it along the top of the previous row and crochet over it loosely.
24. At the end, bend the reinforcement back 2 cm, wrap with yarn and secure firmly before FO.
25. On the opposite long edge, work 1 sc in every row-end space to prevent stretching.
Cottage Body – Make 5
26. With chosen wall color, ch 13.
27. Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and across. (12)
28. Rows 2-10: Ch 1, sc across.
29. Make a second identical rectangle for the back.
30. Side walls: Ch 8; work 7 sc for 10 rows. Make 2.
31. Sew side walls between front and back using mattress stitch. Insert a small plastic-canvas base if desired and stuff lightly.
Peaked Gables
32. At top edge of front panel, join yarn.
33. Row 1: Sc across 12.
34. Row 2: Dec, sc 8, dec. (10)
35. Row 3: Dec, sc 6, dec. (8)
36. Continue decreasing 2 sts each row until 2 sts remain. FO.
37. Repeat on the back panel.
Roof – Make 2 Panels per Cottage
38. With white, brown or contrasting roof color, ch 15.
39. Rows 1-8: Sc across 14.
40. FO, leaving long sewing tail.
41. Sew the two roof panels together along one long edge to form a ridge. Place over the gables and sew securely to the cottage.
42. For snowy roofs, add a final surface row of white sc or small bobbles along each roof edge.
Doors, Windows and Chimney
43. Door: With contrasting yarn, ch 5; sc 4 for 5 rows. Sew to front.
44. Window: Ch 4; sc 3 for 3 rows. Make 1-2 per cottage. Embroider a cross frame with gold or cream yarn.
45. Chimney: Magic ring 6 sc; work 5 rounds straight. Stuff lightly and sew to one roof slope.
46. Add a tiny wreath, berry knot or snow cap if desired.
Gold Star – Make 5 to 7
47. With mustard or gold yarn, magic ring.
48. Repeat 5 times: ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch, sc in next, hdc in next, dc in next, sl st into ring.
49. Close ring, join and FO.
50. For a larger topper, use ch 7 on each point and work sl st, sc, hdc, dc, tr along the chain.
Assembly and Final Shaping
51. Cut 100-115 cm of strong support cord. Make a 12-15 cm hanging loop at the top.
52. Attach the large gold star directly below the loop.
53. Sew the narrow end of the white strip to the center cord just below the star.
54. Form the first turn 8-10 cm wide, then continue downward, increasing the diameter of each turn by 5-7 cm.
55. Aim for four or five major turns, with the lowest tier approximately 32-38 cm wide.
56. Tack the inside edge to the center cord at every turn and add hidden cross-stitches between neighboring tiers.
57. Arrange cottages before sewing. Place one small cottage high, one medium cottage on the next tier, two cottages on the middle-lower tier, and one or two near the base.
58. Sew each cottage to the spiral through its base and back wall. Use at least three attachment points per cottage.
59. Suspend small gold stars from short threads between houses.
60. Hang the tree for several minutes, then adjust cottage angles and tier spacing until the weight is balanced.
Finishing and Blocking
61. Block the long strip before final assembly, not after the cottages are attached.
62. If the base tilts, add an extra hidden support thread from the outermost lower edge back to the center cord.
63. Hide all reinforcement ends completely inside crochet stitches.
64. Check that every cottage is firmly attached and cannot swing freely into another cottage.
65. Keep the finished mobile away from open flames, hot bulbs and very young children.
Optional Variations
• Create a Scandinavian palette with white, red and natural brown cottages.
• Add tiny embroidered doors and windows instead of crocheted appliques for a lighter piece.
• Use small snowmen or pine trees between houses.
• Replace the gold stars with snowflakes for a fully snowy theme.
• Make only three cottages for a smaller window-size version.
