These crochet hangings are inspired by the four decorations in the photo. The first design has a sunflower with leaves and small bees. The second design has a purple shell with a pearl and small sea decorations. The third design has a butterfly with small flowers. The fourth design has a rainbow with soft white clouds. Each decoration has a long spiral below the top motif and a crystal style drop at the bottom. The patterns below are simple photo inspired versions written from scratch. They are meant to create a similar look and can be adjusted a little for your yarn and crochet tension.
Materials
Use soft cotton yarn or acrylic yarn in yellow brown green black white lilac purple pink orange red light blue and dark blue. You will also need a crochet hook between 3 mm and 4 mm. Use a tapestry needle and scissors. Small amounts of fiberfill are useful for the bees and the small round decorations. You can use one large pearl bead for the shell. Clear drop beads can be added at the bottom if you want the same hanging finish as the photo. Use strong cord or a thin metal ring for the top hanging loop.
Basic Stitches
This project uses a magic ring. It also uses chain stitch. Single crochet. Half double crochet. Double crochet. Slip stitch. Increase. And decrease.
How To Make The Main Spiral
The same spiral method can be used for all four designs. Only the colors change.
Chain between 110 and 140 stitches. Use the shorter chain for a small hanging and the longer chain for a taller hanging.
Work 3 double crochet stitches in every chain. The strip will begin to curl while you work.
When the first row is complete work one row of single crochet along one outer edge. Change color if you want a two color spiral.
If the spiral feels too soft work one more row of half double crochet along the other edge. Shape the spiral gently with your hands.
Sunflower Top
Use dark brown yarn for the center. Make a magic ring and work 8 single crochet stitches inside.
Round 2. Work 2 single crochet stitches in every stitch. You will have 16 stitches.
Round 3. Work 1 single crochet stitch then make an increase. Repeat around. You will have 24 stitches.
Work one plain round to make the center firm.
Change to yellow yarn. For each petal chain 5. Slip stitch in the second chain from the hook. Work 1 single crochet then 1 half double crochet then 1 double crochet. Slip stitch into the next stitch of the brown center.
Repeat around until the flower is full. If you want a richer sunflower make a second layer of petals behind the first layer.
Sunflower Leaves
Use green yarn. Chain 9.
Work 1 single crochet in the second chain. Then work 1 half double crochet. Then 3 double crochet stitches. Then 1 half double crochet and 1 single crochet.
Work 3 single crochet stitches in the last chain. Continue on the other side of the chain with the same stitches in reverse order. Make two or three leaves and sew them under the sunflower.
Small Bee Pattern
Use yellow yarn. Make a magic ring and work 6 single crochet stitches inside.
Increase to 12 stitches. Work one plain round in yellow.
Change to black yarn and work one plain round. Change back to yellow for one round. Change to black again for one round.
Add a little fiberfill. Decrease around and close the body.
For each wing use white yarn. Chain 4 and work back with slip stitch single crochet and half double crochet. Make two wings and sew them to the top of the bee.
Sew one or two bees to the green and yellow spiral. Keep them small so the hanging stays light.
Shell Top
Use lilac yarn. Chain 20.
Row 1. Work 1 half double crochet in the second chain and in every chain across.
Rows 2 to 8. Work half double crochet through the back loop only. This makes raised ribs.
Fold the rectangle like a fan. Sew one short end together tightly so the piece opens into a shell shape.
Make a second smaller ribbed piece for the lower shell if you want the open shell look in the photo. Sew the two pieces together only at the back.
Sew one large pearl bead inside the shell.
Sea Spiral Decorations
For this version use light blue white and purple for the spiral.
Make a small starfish with cream yarn. Start with a magic ring and 10 single crochet stitches. For each point chain 4 and work back with slip stitch single crochet and half double crochet. Repeat five times.
Make one or two tiny flowers with pink yarn. Use a magic ring and 5 small petals.
Butterfly Top
Use black yarn for the body and dark outline. Use pink and purple yarn for the wings.
Make the body first. Chain 10 with black yarn. Work back with single crochet stitches. Make one more row and fasten off.
For each upper wing make a magic ring with pink yarn and work 10 double crochet stitches inside. On the next round work 2 double crochet stitches in each stitch. Change to purple and work one round around the edge.
For each lower wing make a smaller circle with 8 double crochet stitches in a magic ring. Increase once around and finish with a purple edge.
Sew two upper wings and two lower wings behind the black body. Add a thin black border around the outside if you want a stronger butterfly shape.
For the antennae use two short black chains. Sew them to the top of the body.
Butterfly Spiral Flowers
Use purple and pink yarn for the spiral.
Make several small flowers. Start with a magic ring and work 5 single crochet stitches. For each petal chain 3 and work 2 double crochet stitches then slip stitch back to the ring.
Sew the flowers to different turns of the spiral.
Rainbow Top
The rainbow is worked as a flat curved strip.
Start with purple yarn and chain 18.
Work 2 single crochet stitches in every chain. The strip will curve.
Join blue yarn to the outer edge and work one row of single crochet. Then add green. Then yellow. Then orange. Finish with red on the outside.
Keep adding a few extra stitches near both ends so the rainbow stays curved and flat.
Clouds
Use white yarn. Make three small circles with 10 to 12 double crochet stitches in a magic ring.
Overlap the circles and sew them together to form one cloud. Make two clouds. Sew one cloud to each end of the rainbow.
Rainbow Spiral
Start the spiral with red near the top. Change gradually to orange then yellow then green then blue and finish with purple at the bottom.
The easiest way is to change color every 20 to 25 chains before working the curl.
Bottom Crystal Style Drop
If you have a clear drop bead attach it to the bottom with strong thread. If you do not have one you can make a small crochet drop.
For a crochet drop make a magic ring and work 6 single crochet stitches. Increase to 12 stitches. Work two plain rounds. Then decrease slowly until the piece closes. Add a little fiberfill before closing.
Top Hanging Loop
Attach a small metal ring above the top motif if you have one. Pass strong cord through the ring and tie a long hanging loop. You can also crochet a simple chain loop if you prefer an all yarn finish.
Final Assembly
Choose one top motif. Sew the top of the spiral securely under it.
Add the small decorations to the spiral. Use bees for the sunflower version. Use starfish and flowers for the shell version. Use small flowers for the butterfly version. Keep the rainbow spiral simple so the colors stay visible.
Attach the clear drop bead or crochet drop at the bottom. Add the hanging loop at the top. Check every sewing point before displaying the decoration.
Making Them Look Closer To The Photo
Keep the top motifs large enough to be the main focus. Make the spirals narrow and firm. Use bright clean colors. Keep the small decorations light and spaced apart. Use one clear drop at the bottom for a neat finish.
